In 1943, the all-wing, jet-powered Horten Ho 229 promised spectacular performance and the head of the German Luftwaffe, Hermann Göring, allocated half a million Reichsmarks to the brothers Reimar and Walter Horten to build and fly several prototypes. Numerous technical problems plagued this unique design and the only powered model crashed after several test flights, but the aircraft remains one of the most unusual fighter aircraft tested during World War II.
