Churchill's tanks were among the first armored vehicles to land on the beaches of Normandy in support of the Allied invasion of France on June 6, 1944. These were the specialized tanks of the 79th Armored Division. Known as "Hobart Funnies". These first land tanks were the specialized Churchill AVRE (Armored Vehicles Royal Engineers) tanks developed to perform combat engineering tasks, not the standard Churchills of the Infantry Tank Brigades.
