The Panzerjäger Tiger Ausf. B, known as the Jagdtiger (hunting tiger), was the heaviest tank ever to see action during World War II. Developed late in the conflict, only about 80 saw combat, the first in September 1944.
Germany, like many nations, made use of existing tank designs to manufacture self-propelled guns and tank destroyers. The Jagdtiger was a colossal example of this practice: the Germans wanted to improve the much-feared Tiger II by mounting the 128mm Pak 44 gun in a specially designed armored frame on the elongated King Tiger Chassis. 150 units were ordered to deal with the ever-encroaching Soviet armor – the Pak was more than capable of punching through Allied armor.
At 71 tons, the behemoth had nearly 10 inches of armor on the front of its collapsible hull, making it one of the best-protected tanks of the war. However, all this weight and protection came at the cost of reliability. Many roads and bridges simply could not support its weight. This, along with increasing shortages of spare parts and fuel, prevented the Jagdtiger from reaching its potential.
The 'teeth' of the Jagdtiger were the 128mm PaK 44 anti-tank gun. Noted for its weapon's performance at long ranges, the Jagdtiger was rightly feared. However, the gun's limited travel meant the tank had to turn in place to put the enemy in its sights and the two-part ammunition required additional crew to load. To represent this in Bolt Action, the 128mm Pak 44 does not suffer a -1 penetration penalty when firing at targets more than half range.
Only two German schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung (heavy anti-tank battalions) included Jagdtigers, the 512th Heavy Panzerjäger Battalion and the 653rd Heavy Panzerjäger Battalion. One company of the 512th was commanded by the renowned Panzer Ace, Otto Carius, who is credited with destroying over 150 tanks and a similar number of anti-tank guns; he would win the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. The included water slide decal sheet features Carius decals.
The box contains a plastic tank, a unit stat card, vehicle damage markers, and a sheet of water-based decals.
