The Hellcat's prodigious speed was achieved by keeping its armor no more than 1″ thick. Hellcat crews quickly took advantage of the vehicle's speed to minimize the enemy's ability to pierce its thin armor. The Hellcats used their speed to flank and penetrate the side and rear of heavily armored German Tiger and Panther tanks.
The M18 Hellcat saw service on the Western Front generally. However, it also saw action in the Pacific and in Italy. The U.S. military also supplied the M18 to Chinese Nationalist forces opposing the Japanese in the Pacific theater. As this was an over-the-top situation against weakly armored Japanese tanks, the Hellcat was most often used in a fire support role.
After the war the Hellcat would be in service with several nations and is still in use with the Venezuelan Army!
