The M4A1 Sherman is the first production version of the M4 Sherman medium tank. It first saw combat in North Africa along with some M4A2s during Operation Torch in November 1942. Additional M4s and M4A1s replaced M3s in American tank battalions over the course of the North African campaign. The Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively cheap to produce, and available in large quantities. The M4A1 Sherman was equipped with a Continental R-975 air-cooled radial engine and a one-piece cast hull. They were available with a 75mm or 76mm gun. The M4A1 (75) was used by the US, Great Britain, South Africa, France (small numbers) and China.
There are four variants of the M4A1. The M4A1 (75) Sherman (Sherman II in the British naming system) with a 75 mm gun (6,181 units); the M4A1 (75) Sherman with large hatches (100 units); the M4A1 (76) W Sherman (Sherman IIA) with “wet” ammunition stowage (2,171 units); and the M4A1 (76) W HVSS Sherman (Sherman IIAY) with HVSS suspension (1,255 units).
