Oni are enormous creatures whose monstrous heads sprout one or more horns and whose skins are bright red, blue or green. Oni are not mere mortal creatures, but demons or evil spirits made flesh. Of the four gates of the world, the kimon (demon gate) is guarded by sleepless oni, whose task is to keep evil spirits out of mortal lands. The kimon is found under the stars of the Ox and the Tiger, which is why oni have horns like those of the ox and wear snakeskin clothing. They are armed with large iron clubs called kanabō, almost as tall as they are.
In the game Warlords of Erehwon, oni are powerful monsters that wield "huge maces" and can make two melee attacks at once. They are large monsters and their fighting values are impressive, making them deadly adversaries.
