Among the most feared tanks of World War II, the mere mention of the name 'Tiger' was enough to cause panic among Allied armored formations.
The Tiger was rushed into action on the Russian front as a response to heavier Soviet tanks that had caught the Wehrmacht off guard. Its huge square body and rounded turret intimidated enemy tankers. The armor was tremendously thick and made of quality steel, making it largely invulnerable, at least frontally, to anti-tank fire.
Its powerful 88mm cannon was a lethal weapon, effective against enemy tanks at a distance of up to three kilometers and also fired a lethal high-explosive projectile.
At 52 tons, the Tiger was slow, but its wide tracks ensured reasonable cross-country performance. Its crews were specially trained as it was an expensive machine to build and maintain. A well-trained veteran crew of five could take on several enemy tanks with a reasonable chance of defeating them all, with little danger to the crew or the tank.
Typically, Tigers were formed into separate heavy tank battalions and were distributed by high command where they were most needed, their presence usually being sufficient to tip the balance in that sector.
