Hardy, lavishly equipped and politically indoctrinated, the SS troops formed more than 38 divisions and many other regiment- and battalion-sized units, totaling nearly a million men under arms.
Their armored units won much praise for their actions, and although relations between regular army units and the Waffen-SS were sometimes strained, most SS units fought fiercely, against all odds, until the war ended. in Berlin in 1945.
The Waffen-SS was a controversial organization: its zeal and discipline could not be questioned, although its many documented atrocities are perhaps its greatest legacy.
