"Pro Libertate" (for freedom). Wallace clan motto.
Sir William Wallace (1272? - 1305) Scottish national hero, proclaimed "guardian of Scotland in the name of the king." He distinguished himself as the organizer of the Scottish resistance against the English king Edward I. His exploits were a famous subject for Scottish epic poets. Wallace took advantage of his knowledge of the terrain and the peculiarities of his eminently light troops to achieve offensives that forced the English to recover brilliant victories, even devastating the north of England. He was executed in English territory after being taken prisoner.
The intention of the "Chieftain" Project, developed privately by ALEPH with the support of PanOceania and Yu Jing, was to recreate a figure characteristic of the Scottish nationalist spirit to introduce it to Ariadne to fan the flames of Caledonian independence. As a force of discord, it would try to divide the different Ariadne communities, leading the Caledonians to undertake a series of campaigns of annexation and conquest. That way, internal conflict and civil war would weaken Ariadne and discredit them before O-12, paving the way for PanOceania and Yu Jing's unrestricted entry into that rich planet.
Wallace was sent to Ariadna in a stealthy, non-retrievable personal drop capsule. Upon re-entry from polar orbit, the most unprotected but also most complicated access that any planet could have, it encountered a strong electrical storm. The Recreation lost control of the vehicle, crashing in the subarctic zone of the northern Ariadne continent, five hundred kilometers from the planned landing point and in the heart of the Antipodean territory.
A normal man would have died from the force of the impact, but Wallace is no normal man. He survived, although he received a brutal head wound that damaged some of his wetware and destroyed his ability to communicate with ALEPH. Suffering from acute shock and partial amnesia, Wallace wandered lost and disoriented throughout the region, killing Antipodes on his way.
When he reached the end of his strength, he was found by a group of Caledonian hunters, who took him in, mistaking him for a Cateran renegade. In this way, Wallace was taken in a semi-comatose state to the Caledonian town of Inverloch. There he would quickly recover from his injuries, although not from his amnesia, remaining unable to remember his mission or his origin.
However, before he could begin to worry about his situation, Antipodean attacks on the colony began. It was a series of retaliatory raids for the carnage caused by the Reenactment, which had broken an already fragile truce. And in the intensity of combat the legendary William Wallace was reborn. The tenacity, resolve and bravery that Wallace demonstrated during the battle deeply impressed the Caledonians. Weapons in hand, he would defend an entire section of the city, masterfully and forcefully assuming command of the entire defense, breaking up the numerous Antipodean attacks and organizing hunting squadrons to track down the survivors and prevent their reorganization.
Wallace had saved the settlement. He was the hero of the colony, but he was also the one who provoked the attacks, and he had to answer to the House of Clans and clarify his identity. His superhuman qualities made the members of the Chamber suspect his extra planetary origin, so they required the advice of the "cultural attaché" of the Nomad Trade Mission, the coverage of the local Black Hand operation, which identified him as an agent ALEPH.
But Wallace had spent too much time disconnected from AI and its continuous updates. During his stay among the Caledonians, he had returned to his origins and had no interest in recovering his lost memory, nor in becoming an ALEPH puppet again.
The Recreation was subjected to a very delicate operation, by Nomad technicians, who mutilated all the systems dependent on ALEPH, applying the knowledge obtained in "Operation Avicenna". Once assured of Wallace's capacity for independent thought, the nomads, with a sense of dark humor, pressured Ariadne's authorities to harness the recreation's capabilities against its own creator. There could be no better revenge against ALEPH, nor did anything better suit Wallace's character than making him a symbol of Ariadne's freedom and autonomy.
Assigned as a tactical officer in the Highlander army, he, after a rocky start, integrated seamlessly into Caledonian society. At first, and due to his origins, he was considered selfish and lived under the dark shadow of betrayal. Because of this, he was involved in more honor duels than any other officer in the military. In those times, the champions of most of the Greater Clans of Caledonia challenged him to hand-to-hand combat, and none of them managed to defeat him. Wallace knew how to assert himself first with the strength of his arm, and then, gradually, with diplomacy, cunning and bravery, gaining the trust of the leaders of the House of Clans.
Wallace has been recreated with updated tactical knowledge for modern combat, adapting to the latest warfare techniques, in which he is an expert. Leadership is innate in him, but his greatest virtue is that he has the heart of a warrior. He can imagine the most risky battle plans and see them through personally. His quick intelligence and incredible stamina are extraordinary. He radiates an animal-like energy that gives him a feeling of something wild and untamed. In combat he is unstoppable, his improved body allows him to always advance, ignoring enemy projectiles and demonstrating his predilection for hand-to-hand combat.
Wallace's military history is as long as the sword of his Claymore sword, which especially distinguished itself during the Fourth Antipodean Offensive and the Smuggler Wars in the Ariadne Exclusion Zone. He has earned his rank and position through persistence, fierceness and that tenacity so characteristic of the Caledonians. Now, after several years of continuous service, one recognizes in him a brilliant, terrible and disturbing commander, who can extract the last drop of determination and courage from his healthy Highlanders, of whom he is immensely proud and always guided by the front line of battle
